Gas Fires

Choosing the right fire.

This starts by identifying your type of chimney or flue your property has. It should look something like the pictures below. If you can't make it out please pop into our showroom or call and our helpfull staff will help you figure out which you have. But due to the vast number of varing flue types your exsisting fire may need to be removed to confirm flue type and product suitability.

Once you know which chimney or flue you have simply click on the links below the type you have and this will direct you to the type of fires suitable

Class 1 Chimney

A Class 1 Flue is easily recognised by a conventional brick chimney with chimney stack on the roof. This relies on the natural "pull" to expel the hot fumes out of the chimney pot. The minimum internal diameter for class 1 is 180mm. This allows you to have most types of gas fires.

If a flue liner has been used to rectify a leak the liner needs to have a minimum internal diameter of 180mm and be twin wall construction to keep it as a class 1 flue. If the liners internal dimension is only 127mm the chimney becomes Class 2 and the class one fires can not be used.

Gas Baskets (All Open front)

These gas baskets suit a large opening. They will defiantly create a focal point for any room with a class one chimney. Below is just a selection of baskets available, there are many more styles. Please be aware that these style of baskets have a low heat out put therefore should be used as decorative use.

Small Inset Open Fronted Fires

These fires suit much smaller openings, usually 16/18" wide x 22" high. These fires try to replicate the look of a real fire by having realistic deep fuel bed, similar sizes to an old clay fire back. You can get many types of fires from taper trays, hot boxes and convectors all of which are shown below. Seeing is believing though so why not make a visit to our showroom and see for yourself.

Class 2 Flues

Prefabricated:

Pre-Fabricated Flue is a metal flue box that is located behind the fire connected by a series of metal flue pipes running up through the property terminating with a pipe and terminal through the roof. The internal diameter of the pipe is 127mm (5"). There are a large number of fires available for this situation. Occasionally, the flue may have been made using 180mm pipe. If this is the case, the flue is classed as Class 1.

Pre-cast Flues:

There are two types of Class 2 Pre-Cast Flue. A Pre & 1986 Post 1986 (the differences are described below). They are commonly found in more modern homes. Constructed by using hollow concrete flue blocks which create a flue up through the property usually connected via flue pipe to a centre ridge vent on the roof. In most cases there is just a flat wall in the room where the fire goes. This does limit slightly the choice of appliances suitable as opening depth & width can be an issue.

Pre 86 : Flues conforming to BS1289-1 & BS1289-2 of that at least 3 metres effective height and having flue ways of minimum cross sectional area of 13000mm2 with no dimension less than 63mm.

Post 86: Flues conforming to Revised 1986 BS1289-1 & BS1289-2 (1989) of that at least 3 metres effective height and having flue ways of minimum cross sectional area of 16500mm2 with no dimension less than 90mm.To help prevent plaster cracking an air gap or form of insulated lining should be used between the flue blocks & plasterboard

Class 2 Inset Open Fronted Fires

These fires are very similar to the class 1 variants but are slightly shallower. They will give a very realistic flame effect and reasonable heat outputs

Power Flued (Open Fronted) Fires

The Power fires are vitually the same as the standard class 2 fires above, but incorporates an electric fan that vents the fumes directly though the wall to the outside air. There are certain regulations where the external extraction fan can be situated, please ask our staff to advise locations.

Matchless is the only manufacturer to offer a heat saverfan cover system. Which automatically shuts of the vent hole when the fire is turned off to stop any cold air coming through. This is only avaliable on the Excalibur

Balanced Flue Fires (Glass Fronted)

Balanced flue fires are all glass fronted. Instead of using an electric fan like the fires above they use an exhaust system which allows combustion air to come in to the fire through one tube and exhausts the fumes out through the other. Most balanced flue systems are rear exit only, but some are available with extensions for longer flue runs if required.

All the "Hole in the wall" designed fireplaces & fires below require a false chimney breast. Due to the depth of the fire taking up the cavity of the wall and the fireplace is then built into and on the false breast. Dependant on which make & model of appliance you decide the breast may be constructed prior to installation of the fire.

You have probably noticed that all the power flue fires all have small openings. This is due to the use of a standard Power Flue fire & fan system mated to most of our designs. If the larger openings are required we can accomodate this by using the Euxhausto Fan system. However this is a more exspensive alternative & would require a larger false breast & larger flue ducting. For more information please contact our showroom who will be able to help.

Exhausto RSG Fan Unit

Each fan is calibrated to suit the designed flue system

Exhausto fan systems allow the larger openings as the fireplaces above.

Each fan is sized and calibrated to suit the opening size , flue gather and flue run.

Please talk to our staff who can help design you flue arrangements and get the fireplace of your dreams installed
